Chapter 11

Apollo 10

Apollo 10’s mission was to orbit the Moon, just like Apollo 8. However, this time a lunar lander would also be traveling along. Apollo 10 lifted off on May 18, 1969. The mission was a dress rehearsal for Apollo 11, which was scheduled to land on the Moon later that summer. Apollo 10’s crew included Thomas Stafford, Gene Cernan, and John Young. They named their command module Charlie Brown and the lunar module Snoopy.

While Young stayed behind and flew Charlie Brown, Stafford and Cernan descended in Snoopy. They got within nine miles (14 km) of the lunar surface before they turned back. It was a bittersweet moment for the astronauts, to have come so far without landing on the Moon. However, their tests and measurements would be a big help for the historic Moon landing to come.
